Singapore Management University (SMU) is expanding its capital markets research as Asia takes on a larger role in global corporate financing.
The university has launched the Singapore Capital Markets Initiative (SCMI) under the Centre for Commercial Law in Asia at the SMU Yong Pung How School of Law.
The initiative will focus on research, policy dialogue and talent development at the intersection of law and finance, with an emphasis on Singapore and Asia.
Its research will cover equity and debt capital markets, venture capital, private equity, private credit, corporate governance, investor protection, financial regulation, market infrastructure and emerging technologies.
The initiative comes as global capital markets undergo major shifts.
IPO activity has slowed in many economies, while private equity, venture capital and private credit are playing a larger role in corporate financing.
Asia has become more central to this shift, with the region now home to more than 55 percent of the world’s listed companies and more than half of global venture capital activity, according to SMU.

Professor Lee Pey Woan, Dean of SMU Yong Pung How School of Law, said,
“SCMI will serve as a platform for interdisciplinary research and policy engagement, positioning SMU as an international leader in capital markets research, and establishing Singapore as a hub for capital markets research, thought leadership and policy influence in law and finance.”
The initiative will be led by Professor Aurelio Gurrea-Martínez, together with Professor Dan Puchniak and Assistant Professor Nydia Remolina.
