Mastercard Rolls Out Cashless Payments for Jakarta’s MRT Commutersby Fintech News Indonesia December 21, 2023
Payment giant Mastercard has partnered with PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) to provide more payment options to commuters for cashless transit experiences. This announcement coincides with the renaming of Senayan Station to Senayan Mastercard Station.
Travelers can now top up their MRT cards using Mastercard debit cards at station counters. Additionally, for the first time, Mastercard credit cards are now accepted for ticket purchases through the MyMRTJ app.
MRT Jakarta has experienced a huge increase in ridership, reaching an average of 100,000 passengers daily by September 2023. The number of passengers is expected to grow further with the expansion of the MRT network.
With this move, Jakarta joins other major cities where Mastercard has facilitated contactless transit systems.
Tuhiyat, President Director of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) said,
“The collaboration with Mastercard is a testament to MRT Jakarta’s inclusive approach, which aims to cultivate Jakarta as the hub of national economic and business activities.
Looking ahead, we look forward to further collaboration and innovation with Mastercard to improve the travel experience of MRT Jakarta passengers.”
Aileen Goh, President Director, PT Mastercard Indonesia said,
“Under this partnership, a first for Indonesia, PT MRT Jakarta and Mastercard will be working closely to ensure that anyone in Jakarta, resident or tourist, can enjoy an improved and simplified transit experience, starting with convenient and secure cashless payments.
More importantly, because transit touches the lives of a large proportion of the population, this initiative has the ability to shift consumer behavior to cashless payments at scale, creating a halo effect that meaningfully impacts change and fosters digital transformation and inclusion.”
