How to Use Buy Now Pay Later in Singapore
Using BNPL is a fairly straightforward process. You’ll have to pick your product or service and BNPL provider, and you’re set. Here’s how it works:
#1 Shop like you usually do
Add items to your cart at an online retailer or shop in-store at a participating merchant. All three major providers are generally accepted across a wide range of online and physical stores in Singapore, from fashion and electronics to travel and dining.
#2 Choose your BNPL provider at checkout
Select your preferred provider when you reach the payment page. For SPayLater, purchases are limited to the Shopee app and participating ShopeePay in-store merchants. Atome and PayLater by Grab have broader merchant networks spanning third-party retailers, both online and offline.
#3 Sign up or log in
First-time users will need to register with basic personal details. Some providers run a soft credit or identity check as part of the approval process. This does not affect your credit score. You must be at least 18 years old, as all accredited BNPL providers in Singapore are required under the Code of Conduct to restrict access to adults only.
#4 Select your repayment plan
This is where the providers differ. Choose the plan that fits your budget, and note that shorter tenures are typically cheaper.
#4 Make the first payment
For most plans, the first instalment is due upfront at checkout. The amount depends on the plan you choose. For example, for a Pay-in-3, that’s one third of your purchase’s total when you’re completing your purchase.
#5 Enjoy now, pay responsibly later
Subsequent instalments are automatically deducted from your linked credit or debit card on the scheduled dates. Miss a payment, and your account will be suspended from making further BNPL purchases until the overdue amount is cleared. This is a consumer protection measure built into the Code of Conduct.
Late fees may also apply depending on the provider, so it’s worth setting a calendar reminder if you’re not on auto-debit.
What’s Next for Buy Now Pay Later in Singapore?
In a February 2025 parliamentary session, Gan Kim Yong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, and Chairman of MAS, reaffirmed that the BNPL Code of Conduct sets the standards to reduce risks and protect users. An independent oversight committee of qualified members will investigate suspected Code breaches by accredited BNPL providers.
A separate April 2025 parliamentary reply also addressed BNPL advertising, reaffirming that accredited firms are required to ensure their ads are not misleading, clearly disclose any fees or late charges, and must not imply that BNPL is “risk-free” or suitable for all users.
Singapore’s BNPL market is entering a more mature phase. Future growth will likely hinge on broader merchant acceptance and whether previously reported bank-led instalment products eventually hit the market.
