The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) today marked the official integration of the Bakong Tourists app with Visa, expanding digital payment options for international visitors.
While the app was first launched in November last year, this integration allows tourists to link their Visa cards from their home countries and make payments using KHQR codes at around 4.5 million merchants across Cambodia.
The app also enables users to transfer funds to their individual Bakong accounts, offering an alternative to cash transactions.
The launch ceremony, led by NBC Governor Dr. Chea Serey, brought together about 300 participants, including representatives from government ministries, international payment firms, and private companies.
This collaboration aims to reduce reliance on physical currency and encourage the use of Cambodia’s local currency, the Khmer Riel.
It also supports ongoing efforts to improve digital payment infrastructure and streamline transactions for both tourists and businesses.

Arturo Planell, Group Country Manager, Regional Southeast Asia at Visa, said,
“This milestone reflects Visa’s commitment to digital and financial inclusion in Cambodia, supporting tourism businesses and small enterprises.”

H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, aded,
“We aim to modernise payment systems to meet the needs of local citizens, businesses, and international tourists.
The integration of VISA with the Bakong Tourists App enhances interoperability, fosters a cashless society, and aligns with Cambodia’s digital economy goals.”
