Adyen has announced the rollout of Visa Payment Passkey through Authenticate, a module within its AI-powered payment optimisation suite, Adyen Uplift.
Adyen will initially offer the integration in the UK, allowing eligible consumers to authenticate online payments using their device’s existing unlock method.
The integration aims to simplify online checkout by reducing additional authentication steps while strengthening protection against fraud and phishing attacks.
How Visa Payment Passkey works
Visa Payment Passkey allows cardholders to authenticate eligible online purchases using their device’s unlock method.
Once a cardholder’s bank verifies their identity and they create a passkey, they can use their device’s unlock method to authenticate future eligible transactions.
The feature supports both first-time purchases and returning customers.
Adyen has integrated Visa Payment Passkey into Authenticate, which uses machine learning to determine whether a transaction requires authentication, select the most suitable method and decide what information to share with the card issuer.
By adding Visa Payment Passkey as another authentication option, Adyen allows merchants to access new authentication technologies without requiring separate integrations.

“Authentication shouldn’t be a hurdle that disrupts the customer experience,”
said Rahul Hampole, SVP Product for Payments at Adyen.
“By integrating Visa Payment Passkey into Authenticate, we are giving our merchants a seamless way to protect their customers against fraud while making online checkout faster and more intuitive using familiar device biometrics.”
Dan Sanford, SVP Global Product and Initiatives at Visa, said:

“Through innovations such as Visa Payment Passkeys, we’re helping embed authentication directly into the payment experience, reducing friction for consumers while strengthening security and improving outcomes for merchants.”
Global expansion planned for 2027
Adyen will initially offer Visa Payment Passkey through Authenticate in the UK, with further enhancements and a global expansion planned for 2027.
The integration forms part of Adyen’s broader approach to managing payment authentication through a single platform, allowing merchants to adopt additional authentication methods without implementing separate integrations for each one.
